SOMMERFERIEUDFORDRING TIL SOCIOLOGER

Kære kolleger

Her er en interessant udfordring med udsigt til en præmie på kr. 100.000.

Det drejer sig om en priskonkurrence udskrevet af den norske sociolog, komiker mv. Harald Eia i samarbejde med Morgenbladet og Jon Elster. Man skal blot forklare, 1) hvad der forstås ved “ubevidste strategier” og, 2) hvordan handlinger kan forklares af deres utilsigtede virkninger. Følg dette link:

Som man kan se, bliver indsendte besvarelser bedømt af et absolut kvalificeret bedømmelsesudvalg.

Ud over de 100.000 vil man få en kort version publiceret i Morgenbladet.

Det vil jo være godt, hvis danske sociologer viser flaget her. Det er absolut centrale spørgsmål for samfundsvidenskaberne, som ikke kun udfordrer Bourdieu, men også fx Foucault og flere andre. Jeg vil ikke selv påtage mig at svare på spørgsmålene, men for Bourdieu-specialister skulle det være en let sag.

Det må jo i øvrigt siges at være en temmelig opsigtsvækkende og usædvanlig form for medieeksponering af sociologien. At en enkeltperson sætter 100.000 ind, og at et dagblad går med i en priskonkurrence om et så snævert og højpandet emne, ville være utænkeligt i Dk og de fleste lande, som jeg kender til. Det siger også noget om sociologiens position i Norge.

Med håbet om at dette tilbud om tidsfordriv også vil gøre det lettere at komme gennem de ørkesløse feriedage, der ligger forude, ønsker jeg jer god ferie.

ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOCIAL SCIENCES, 4-7 AUGUST 2014, ATHENS, GREECE

First Call for Papers and Participation

The Social Sciences Research Division (SSRD) of the Athens Institute for Education and Research (ATINER) is organizing its first Annual International Conference on Social Sciences which will be held in Athens, Greece on 4-7 August 2014. In the past, the five research units of SSRD have organized 45 annual international conferences on economics, sociology psychology, politics & International Affairs, as well as the mass media & Communication. Papers from all branches of social sciences are welcome: Anthropology, Media and Communication Studies, Economics, Education, Human Geography, Political science, Public Administration, Psychology and Sociology. Papers on Social Research and Social Theory are also welcome.

The registration fee is €300 (euro), covering access to all sessions, 2 lunches, the official dinner (Greek Night of entertainment), coffee breaks and conference material. In addition, a number of cultural and educational activities are being organized such as an urban walk around Athens (which will include the Acropolis), an additional dinner, a special one-day cruise to the Greek islands and a visit to Delphi. Special arrangements will be made with local hotels for a limited number of rooms at a special conference rate.

Please submit a 300-word abstract before 6 January 2014 via email, atiner@atiner.gr to: Dr. Gregory A. Katsas, Head, Sociology Research Unit, ATINER and Associate Professor, The American College of Greece-Deree College, Greece. Please include: Title of Paper, Full Name (s), Current Position, Institutional Affiliation, an email address and at least 3 keywords that best describe the subject of your submission. The aim of the conference is to bring together scholars and students from all areas of Sociology, Social Work and other related fields. Theoretical and empirical research papers will be considered.

SIXTH ISA WORLDWIDE COMPETITION FOR JUNIOR SOCIOLOGISTS DEADLINE MAY 1, 2013

The deadline for the submission of papers to the Sixth ISA Worldwide Competition for Junior Sociologists is May 1, 2013, which is coming soon. The winners of the competition will be invited to a five-day seminar and the ISA World Congress of Sociology in Yokohama in June, 2014. They will be given many opportunities to meet their peers and senior sociologists from around the world. As the chair of the committee of the competition, I was wondering if you would encourage junior sociologists on your research committee to submit papers to me at ysato@sal.tohoku.ac.jp by the deadline. He will be the third guest in the department’s lecture series about the fourth generation of critical theory

Kompridis research areas are Critical theory; democratic theory; theories of agency and action; theories of rationality; theories of identity, recognition, and culture; secularism and modernity; the role of social criticism in social change; the renewal of romanticism; and issues in philosophy of art, literature, music and film. I stigende grad har Elmar Altvater beskæftiget sig med sammenhængen mellem kapitalisme og økologisk krise, aktualiseret af den nuværende verdenskrise og med mulige svar på den: en anden form for – bæredygtig – økonomi, utopiers betydning.

Han er tilknyttet attac og har tætte forbindelser til bl.a. alternative initiativer i Latinamerika. – Forelæsningen er på engelsk.
